Angus Hall Passes

Winbak Farm has announced the death of Angus Hall, 2, 1:54.4z; 3, 1:54.3 ($830,654). The legendary son of Garland Lobell was laid to rest, at the age of 26, on Saturday, Dec. 17.

“Angus Hall had been living out his retirement years at Winbak Farm of Canada,” said Pat Woods, Winbak Farm of Canada Manager. “He was a treasured farm favourite who enjoyed daily pets and apples from the Winbak Farm of Canada team.”

Angus Hall was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2019. Both of his parents, Garland Lobell and Amour Angus, are members of both the Canadian Horse Racing and U.S. Harness Racing Halls of Fame.

“Angus Hall was the complete package,” said Joe Thomson, Winbak Farm Owner. “His success as a stallion helped make Winbak Farm a leading breeder in Canada and enabled the Winbak Farm team to establish strong connections with many North American breeders.”

Angus Hall is a full-brother to Andover Hall, 2, 1:56.2s; 3, 1:51.3 ($875,047) and Conway Hall, 2, 1:57.2; 3, 1:53.4 ($818,884), who both had successful stallion careers of their own.

Angus Hall was a $125,000 yearling. At two, he won a Breeders Crown elimination, Champlain Stakes division, John F. Simpson Stakes and Valley Victory Stakes elimination. He was second in a Bluegrass Stakes division and Campbellville Stakes division.

“Angus Hall transformed the trotting industry and changed our lives forever,” said Bob and Lynda Stewart. “He created many happy memories throughout his life including being the first sub-1:55 two-year-old trotter, a leading sire for many years and a Canadian Hall of Fame inductee.”

At three, Angus Hall won a Hambletonian elimination and Matron Stakes elimination. He was second in the American-National Stakes, Bluegrass Stakes division, Hambletonian final and World Trotting Derby heat.

“Angus Hall was an outstanding racehorse who went on to have a stellar stallion career,” said Jack Burke, Winbak Farm General Manager. “He stood at Winbak Farm Of Canada for 13 years, from 2006 to 2019, and made a strong impact on the farm, modern Canadian racing and on the industry as a whole.”

Angus Hall offspring have won $108,710,059. He is the sire of 289 winners of $100,000 or more lifetime. He is also the sire of 113 with best times of 1:55 or better.

Angus Hall sired six millionaires including Peaceful Way, 1:51.4 ($3,245,055), Majestic Son, 3, 1:52.2s ($1,993,157), Elusive Desire, 1:52.1 ($1,383,848), Winning Mister, 1:51.3 ($1,142,759), Frenchfrysnvinegar, 1:52 ($1,111,627), and Laddie, 3, 1:54s ($1,029,920).

Angus Hall was the leading stallion in the Ontario Sires Stakes from 2003 to 2007 and he was the second-leading trotting stallion from 2008 to 2012.

“He will always hold a special place in our hearts,” said the Stewarts. “We would like to thank Larry and Jackie Drysdale, Pat Woods and all at Winbak Farm Canada for providing a wonderful home for Angus Hall for many years.”

Angus Hall is the grand-sire of millionaires Pinkman, 3, 1:51 ($3,009,653), What The Hill, 3, 1:51.4 ($1,345,999), Bridge To Jesses, 1:51.1s ($1,160,220) and Captain Corey, 3, 1:51f -‘21 ($1,090,333). He is also the grand-sire of world champion Impinktoo, 3, 1:49.4 ($423,860).

“Angus Hall will continue to have an impact at Winbak Farm as the sire of 15 of our leading broodmares,” said Thomson. “His full-sister, Emilie Cas El, is the dam of Trixton, who we are excited to be standing at Winbak Farm of Canada.”

Angus Hall will be remembered fondly by the Winbak Farm team.

“Winbak Farm would like to thank the connections of Angus Hall for allowing us to be part of this legendary stallion’s success,” said Woods. “He was a handsome horse with a great personality and he will always hold a special place in the hearts of many.”
