SC Rewind: Picture Parade

SC Rewind: Picture Parade

As we close out 2023 the last Rewind of the calendar year is the monthly version of Picture Parade. Robert Smith has assembled a group of old photos that  are slightly different from the usual. All of the subjects are pictured in a jog cart instead of the customary sulky and most drivers are wearing clothing suitable for training situations. If you like, send along your best choices for answering the question that accompanies each picture.

Note: Many of today's photos were taken in a time period when large public stables were in vogue. Many of the top horsemen of this era not only handled all of the driving chores for their stable, they were also very much involved in daily training activities. In the modern era I don't think many of the sport's top drivers spend as much time sitting in a jog cart but there may be exceptions.

Most of the questions will be exactly the same for each photo.

Blast From The Past

Blast from the Past

Who can tell us what activity is happening in this old photo? Looks like the guy right at the bottom seated in a lawn chair has about the best job.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! LOOKING FORWARD TO 2024.

The correct answers to this week's "Picture Parade" photos are shown below:
#1 - That fellow was Ralph Baldwin training Speedy Scot
#2 - Ron Feagan of Goderich is the pictured trainer /driver in this one

#4 - Gilles Gendron is all bundled up in his winter suit complete with G G on the front
#5 - That is George "Buzzy" Sholty with a roan horse called Sunny Burch
#6 - The man is Richie Silverman at Greenwood I believe prepping for the N A Cup with Die Laughing if it is marked correctly
#7 - Stanley Dancer and Su Mac Lad are out for a "spin"
#8 - The driver is Joe O'Brien and Armbro Flight
#9 - That is the great Billy Haughton and a pretty great horse named Trader Horn
#10 - I couldn't fool anyone on this one as Herve Filion puts an unidentified pupil through its morning routine .

The Blast From The Past photo was an Amish barn raising. Glad to hear from reader Kent Benson that this great tradition is still being played out.
I would like to thank everyone for your "Happy New Year" wishes . Also a special thanks to Garth Gordon for giving us those impressive descriptions for all of the jog cart types.

Happy New Year to you and all your family.
Best Wishes for good health and happiness in the upcoming New Year ✔️✔️

Number one is Ralph Baldwin training Speedy Scott sitting on a Jerald drop heel jog cart. Number two is Ron Feagan sitting on a straight shaft Oshawa jog cart made by Ross Latimer from Oshawa. In the sixty’s seventies and eighties they were a very popular jog cart. That is the only jog cart I ever used in 43 years training horses. Number three is Frank Ervin sitting on a drop heel Jerald jog cart. Number four is Gills Gendren sitting on a drop heel Brodeur jog cart. Number five I think is George Sholty. Number six is Ritchie Silverman sitting on a drop heel Jerald jog cart. Number seven is Vernon Dancer sitting on a drop heel Wilform jog cart. Number 8 is Joe O’Brien sitting on a drop heel Wilform jog cart. Number nine is Billy Haughton sitting on a straight shaft Jerald jog cart. Number ten is Herve Filion on the rail and probably one of his brothers on the outside training two horses hooked to Wilform drop heel jog carts. Blast from the past is Mennonites building a barn. Probably built it in one day.
