Desperate Man at Mohawk

On the morning of the post draw for the 2023 Pepsi North America Cup at Woodbine Mohawk Park, a past champion of the prestigious race toured the Campbellville, Ont. oval in preparation for his return to the races.

Desperate Man, winner of the 2021 North America Cup, kicked off Tuesday's qualifying session with a 4-1/2-length victory in 1:52.1 in rein to regular driver Trevor Henry.

The five-year-old Shadow Play gelding, who last raced in January competing in Mohawk's top classes, won his second qualifying start this month as he left out from post six and set fractions of :27.2, :55.1 and 1:23.4 before drawing off in the stretch. Hamsandwich and Typhoon Stride N followed back in second and third.

An eight-time winner with more than $1.1 million in earnings, Desperate Man is trained by Kathy Cecchin, who co-owns with her husband John, daughter Nicole and son-in-law Paul Davies.
