Lowell Stead Passes

In loving memory of Lowell Stead

Longtime horse owner Lowell Stead of Montague, P.E.I. passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 in his 81st year at the Kings County Memorial Hospital.

Lowell was born in Souris in 1942, and raised in Fortune for 10 years. He and his parents, Harold and Christine Stead, moved to Montague in 1952 where they purchased a farm in Lower Montague. Lowell worked for several years for the Massey Ferguson dealership in town and later owned his own business, Lowell Stead Inc., a Shell Oil agency located in Brudenell, which he successfully operated for 25 years. He won many awards through Shell Canada, including trips around the world.

Lowell’s warm personality and sense of humour resulted in making many friendships over the years both in business and the horse industry. Upon retirement, he took a keen interest in the sport of horse racing. He owned many horses, but his pride and joy was Stetson Any Size, who raced in the Gold Cup & Saucer race in 2000, 2001 and 2002. The Prince Edward Island Standardbred Horse Owners Association awarded Lowell the Active Horseman of the Year Award in 2010 and he served on the Atlantic Provinces Harness Racing Commission for several years.

He also served as an elder in his church, St. Andrews Presbyterian in Montague, and was a dedicated volunteer and contributor to his local community.

Lowell is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra (nee Wakelin), sister-in-law Sheila Wakelin (Jan Thijsse), niece Shelly King Compton (Grant), nephew Troy King (Tracey), grandnieces Kate Compton and Taylor King, grandnephews J.T. Compton and Dale King, and by cousin Brenda Stead. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Christine Stead, and his brother Robert Graham, in infancy.

Visitation and funeral service have already taken place.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Lowell Stead.
