Harness Racing's Best of the Decade - Broodmare

RICH N ELEGANT

Harness Racing's Broodmare of the Decade

Rich N Elegant is considered by many to be the greatest standardbred broodmare in history. With total progeny earnings of nearly $8.5 million, average earnings per starter of over $935,000 and two Pepsi North America Cup-winning sons - Rocknroll Hanover (pictured above as a weanling) and Red River Hanover -  to her credit, it’s hard to argue. Of her six sons, four have competed in Canada’s richest harness race. People involved with owner Hanover Shoe Farms are convinced she has excelled as a broodmare because she has exceptional mothering instincts.

What They Said About Rich N Elegant:

"Top Broodmare by earnings from 2000-2009, RICH N ELEGANT - $6.1 million."

- Jason Settlemoir, VP of Racing & Simulcast, Tioga & Vernon Downs

"Producer of two that made over 2 million dollars each - that alone is tough to match."

- Jack Darling, owner and O'Brien Award winning trainer

"Royalflush Hanover, Red River Hanover and Rocknroll Hanover. All this from a $14,000 claimer? Wow! This daughter of Direct Scooter has been the most successful broodmare in history with well over $8 million in credits. Ya never know."

- Bob Heyden, The Meadowlands

"She is in a league of her own."

- Greg Blanchard, Woodbine Entertainment Group

"Just an amazing collection of outstanding offspring. Sparks memories of the late Bill Wellwood saying he always looked for yearlings from Direct Scooter mares at the USA sales."

- Frank Salive, announcer and publicity, The Isle Pompano Park

"Rich N Elegant's offspring have shaped harness racing into the sport that we know today and her presence will continue to be felt in the future generations of the sport."

- Paul MacDonell, O'Brien Award winning driver

"There are so ways to evaluate broodmares (foals, starters, percentage of starters, average earnings per starter, stakes wins, auction prices, commercial viability, etc.) but I'll base this one on her offspring's $6.1 million in earnings - which was the best of all on a list that would number well into the thousands."

- Mike Hamilton, Woodbine Entertainment Group

Windsong's Legacy - died after a few unspectacular crops.
Majestic Son - hardly a hall of famer....

Quick: name the second best offspring by either Conway Hall or Angus Hall.

I can't argue with the choice, but Amour Angus' importance to the breed will be hard to match. Andover Hall-Donato Hanover; Conway Hall-Windsong's Legacy; Angus Hall-Majestic Son. All this in such a short period of time. The name Amour Angus will appear on far more pedigree pages than any other mare
