Susan Johnson of Waterdown, Ont., just became involved in harness horse ownership thanks to the Win A Share in A Racehorse promotion sponsored by the Ontario Sires Stakes in conjunction with the London Selected Yearling Sale.

“I had never been to any horse racing event until September 2016. I found it to be very interesting. The horses are beautiful and of course because I did not know anything about racing I chose horses I thought would win by their names. That of course did not work out too well. I now know a bit more but have lots to learn,” explained Johnson, who works in the health care sector for the provincial government.

Johnson received a ballot for the contest at the September 23rd New Owner Seminar at Mohawk Racetrack which she attended with a friend, Dave Pawlik, who had taken part in the SBOA’s Mentoring group but had not owned any horses since the time he’d met Johnson. He was thinking about getting involved again and decided to attend the seminar and Susan went along with him.

Johnson attends the races about twice a month, and visits Mohawk or Flamboro.

“I am really excited to win this prize! It’s funny because last night before I went to bed I thought to myself, ‘Susan you probably own a race horse today’ - and today...I do at least own a part of one. I am excited to take my grandchildren to see the horses as they love animals!”

Johnson’s ballot was drawn from all of the entries in the contest and has won a share ($2,000 value) in LandMark 11 Stable which has partial ownership in three Ontario-sired yearlings including Parlay Seelster, a Mach Three colt purchased on the Sunday session of the London Selected Yearling Sale.

LandMark 11 Stable also includes the Royalty For Life filly, Love For Life, and a Sunshine Beach colt, Dare To Share. Both of these yearlings were purchased in Kentucky.
