Trotting mare Global News rallied off the favourite's cover to steal the spotlight in the $5,000 Preferred 3 featured on Saturday night (Aug. 19) at Hiawatha Horse Park.
Driver Garrett Rooney worked out the winning trip as he sent Global News underway from fifth as the top local trotters headed to the half-mile mark and flushed out cover in the form of the favourite, Workinitonbroadway. As Workinitonbroadway collared the pacesetter Spun From Magic (:27.1, :58.3, 1:27.3) turning for home, Global News rallied three-wide and blew by her foes down the stretch for the 2-1/4-length victory in 1:58.1. The mares swept the exactor as a photo finish for the runner-up honours went the way of Petro Angel, with Monteverdi getting up for third and Workinitonbroadway settling for fourth.
A winner of the Preferred 3 class two starts ago on July 29, Global News was the 7-2 second choice on the toteboard and paid $9.40 to win.
Angie Carroll trains and owns the four-year-old Archangel mare, who earned her fifth win of the season from 23 starts.
