Century Invictus led all the way to grab the Canada Day feature from Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway on Saturday afternoon (July 1).

Trainer-driver Jason Hughes grabbed the lead with Century Invictus and rolled to an easy win in the $3,500 top-class pace. He clocked a 1:55.4 victory by two lengths over Sauble Attack (driven by Dale Spence) and Frontier Cruiser (Adam Merner).

Canada Day celebration saw representation from a variety of provinces at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway but it was the New Brunswick contingent that got a major slice of the action.

Quispamsis, N.B. native Dale Spence had the hot hands on the day with four winners on the Canada Day program. Spence clicked with Starshipzodiac (1:58.1) for trainer Reece Williams, Whiskey Terror from the Kyle Williams barn and Jay Little Spark (1:58.3) and Melody Maker (1:56.4), both for trainer Greg MacInnis.

Chris Davies, who grew up in Saint John, N.B., scored a training double to give New Brunswick training and driving connections six notches on the day. Davies trainee Midnight MacNeill won in 1:56.4 in Race 1 and stablemate Stoney Curtis was a 1:57.3 victor in Race 10, both with Ken Murphy above the wheels.

Soccer Hanover won the Canada Day Pace in Race 8 with a 1:57.3 victory for driver Norris Rogers and trainer Leith Waite of Kensington, P.E.I.

David Dowling and Brookdale Maggie claimed the Race 5 Summerside Legion Branch 5 Pace with a mile time of 1:59 for trainer Phil Sizer, a native of Ontario to throw another province into the mix on Canada’s birthday.

Live harness racing continues Sunday afternoon with a special 12:30 p.m. (ADT) program at Red Shores Charlottetown.
