J K Special Upsets In Mares Open

J K Special, with Walter Cheverie in the bike, won Thursday’s Fillies and Mares Open in 1:58.1 at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Cheverie put the Joe Smallwood trainee on the point and rated the mare through fractions of :29.3, :59.4 and 1:29.3 to score the upset victory over General Luckypercy and Cool One. J K Special paid $44.00 to win. It was Cheverie’s second winner of the night.

The card was also highlighted with two trotting affairs. BJ Carmalyta won the first event for Kenny Arsenault and owner Bert Honkoop while Lyrical Lindy took the second class for driver Jason Hughes, owner William Andrew and trainer Blaine McKenna.

PC Shockwave recorded the fastest mile of the night in 1:56.4. Brian MacPhee did the driving for owner Scott MacPhail.

Racing returns Saturday in Charlottetown at 6 p.m. Red Shores Summerside will go Sunday. Post time is 1 p.m.
