Thiessen Suffers Recovery Setback

Driver Daryl Thiessen was planning to return to the racebike at the end of July after an accident at Century Downs that shattered his clavicle and broke his leg. That required time on the shelf, unfortunately, has since been increased.

Thiessen and Nathan Sobey were injured during the 2021 season opener at Century Downs just over a month ago. Thiessen, while driving a falling Crush Me, was impacted from behind by a trailing horse and suffered a fractured and dislocated femur and a shattered collarbone. Sobey, who drove Sintaluta in the same race and was unable to avoid contact with Thiessen on the backstretch, walked away with a concussion, as well as some bumps and bruises.

Sobey has since returned to action, but the summer stakes season will be one Thiessen will watch from sidelines.

"Just met with my sports therapist," Thiessen told Trot Insider late Thursday while recoving in Manitoba, "and because my hip dislocated so bad it tore some ligaments and I’ll be out until at least September. Not what I wanted to hear but I have to stay positive."

Thiessen was sporting career best numbers at the time of his injury, with a 19-10-13 from 111 starts in 2021 with a UDR of 0.260.
