Alagna’s Troops Triple Up

Trainer Tony Alagna registered the biggest victory of his career on Saturday at Mohawk Racetrack thanks to Captaintreacherous’ scintillating score in the $1 million Pepsi North America Cup, and the hits just kept on coming for the talented conditioner during Monday’s 12-race card at the Campbellville oval.

Alagna sent out three starters, and all three of them found the winner’s circle.

Atalanta, a three-year-old Kadabra filly, got the ball rolling with a front-stepping score in the opener. The lightly-raced lass, who was sent off at odds of 18-1, brushed to the lead past the quarter pole for driver Doug McNair and drew away to win by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:58.2.

In the seventh race it was Validus Deo chalking up his second straight tally for Alagna, who watched Scott Zeron brush to the lead past the quarter pole with the three-year-old son of Lis Mara-Madam Countess. Once he was in command of the tempo, the colt rolled through middle splits of :54.3 and 1:22.3 before using a :28-second closing quarter to seal the deal by two lengths in 1:50.3.

Zeron and Alagna also clicked in Race 9 with Watch The Rhythm. The three-year-old Muscle Mass miss fought hard to win by a neck in 1:55.4. Valley Glider was next best, with Swishnflick taking home the show dough.

Alagna enjoyed a career-year in 2012 thanks in large part to the $1.2 million earned by horses from his barn. He sent out 117 winners, compared to the 125 tallies he savoured in 2012. He’s training winners in excess of $12 million to date.
