There was no denying the level of talent in the field of nine for the $25,000 Horse and Gelding Open Handicap Pace on Saturday (Dec. 17) at Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway. Three geldings coming off Open level wins -- Let It Ride N, Later Dudes and Brookview Bullet went head-to-head for the first time. However, it was 12-1 Rockin Speed who stole the show.

While the three giants battled for the front, driver Jeremy Smith settled Rockin Speed into fifth. The 4-5 favourite Let It Ride N tripped the opening quarter in a blazing :25.4 but it was then Brookview Bullet who quickly grabbed the lead. Past the half in :53.4, Later Dudes found himself first-up and flying to the three-quarter pole in 1:21. In the middle of the pack, Rockin Speed played the long game, sitting patiently along the rail. Headed into the final turn, Jeremy Smith popped the seven-year-old gelding’s earplugs and followed cover. Finding a new gear, Rockin Speed was three-wide at the top of the stretch. Rockin Speed dug in every closing stride to win by a nose in 1:50.3. The gelding returned $26.80 to win. The 5-2 second choice Later Dudes (Chris Page) held on for second while Robert Again (Brett Miller) finished third.

The victory marked the 10th of the season for Hoosier Park invader Rockin Speed. This year is shaping up to be one of the richest years for the gelded son of Rockin Image who is trained by Ken Rucker. After banking $131,445 this year, Rockin Speed has now surpassed $470,000 in lifetime earnings. Rockin Speed is owned in partnership by his conditioner and Jack Freeman.

In observation of the upcoming holiday, live racing will resume Monday, Dec. 19 at Dayton Raceway. First post is 4 p.m.
