Risin Horizon earned his first Inverness Raceway victory, taking on the top pacers in Sunday afternoon's featured finale for trainer Gardner McCallum.
Risin Horizon and driver Keith Legge landed the lead early on in the $1,800 Winners Over Pace when the popular inside leaver, Windemere Best Man (Redmond Doucet), broke stride heading into the backstretch the first time. Risin Horizon assumed command at the inside with Euchred (Walter Walker), who was advancing outside, forced wide around the breaker before settling into the pocket spot by the quarter in :29.2.
When the field straightened into the front stretch, Solid Silver (Rodney Gillis) moved first-up from third with 2-5 favourite Windemere Best Man following his cover after regrouping from the early miscue.
Risin Horizon continued to lead through a 1:00.1 half and three-quarters in 1:31.1 while Windemere Best Man went three-wide down the backstretch and Eastcoast Invader (Monica Sutherland) stormed four-high from the backfield as they turned for home.
But Risin Horizon kept them all bay through the stretch for the 2:00.2 victory over the 'good' track, winning by 1-1/2 lengths. Rallying widest of all from the back of the five-pack, Eastcoast Invader got up for second over Windemere Best Man, who finished third but was placed fifth after a judges inquiry for causing interference on the break. Solid Silver inherited third and Euchred was bumped up to fourth.
Risin Horizon, a Truro Raceway regular who was third in his Inverness debut two starts ago on Oct. 1, paid $13.10 to win as the 5-1 third wagering choice.
A career winner of a dozen races, Risin Horizon has earned three of those wins this year from 19 outings. The five-year-old Vertical Horizon gelding is owned by Wont Back Down Stable of North River, N.S.
