Gold Cup Contenders Meet Saturday

The first six spots for the 2021 edition of The Guardian Gold Cup and Saucer final will be decided Saturday evening (August 14) at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The capital oval hosts a 12-dash program starting at 7:00 p.m. (AT) as the second part of the Saturday doubleheader for Gold Cup Week 2021 with Gold Cup and Saucer Trials 1 and 2.

Trial 1 in race 11 sees Marc Campbell return to the racebike of Time To Dance for owners Brent Campbell of Charlottetown and Matt McDonald of Ontario after having his five-race win streak cut short last week. The defending Gold Cup and Saucer champion will leave from Post 3 in the $12,500 event against six rivals. The top three from each trial will advance to the Gold Cup and Saucer final while the bottom three go to the James (Roach) MacGregor Gold Cup and Saucer consolation. Also in Trial 1 are Sir Pugsley (Jason Hughes), Blood Money (Dr. Mitchell Downey), Day Delight (Walter Cheverie), Evenwood Sonofagun (Gilles Barrieau) and Bugsy Maguire (Adam Merner).

After defeating Time To Dance last week, Rock Lights has the rail in Trial 2 — slated as Race 12 — for trainer Chris MacKay, driver Hughes and owners Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge and D Racing Stable of New York. His competition for a spot in the prestigious final comes from Avatar J (Campbell), Ideal Perception (Barrieau), Rose Run Quest (Corey MacPherson), Racemup (Richard Simard) and Mikey Camden (David Dowling).

The Birthplace Of Confederation Series, sponsored by the City Of Charlottetown in memory of Shelley and Dianne Gass, has eliminations in Race 8 and 10 for aged pacing mares.

CDP track record holder Ladylike is the top choice in the first $3,500 elimination with Dowling in the seat for trainer Colin Johnson and owner Debbie Element of Village Green.

Woodmere Skyroller has rail control in the second split as the Kevin MacLean-trained daughter of Rollwithitharry searches for career win number 21. MacPherson will drive the champion mare for owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford.

Race 1 is the MCR Remembers Richard Campbell Memorial, The Mayor’s Pace is in Race 2, Race 4 has the Allan (Kitten) Livingston and Ian (Cat) Smith Memorial and Race 5 is the Horseshoe Canteen Pace.
