Truro’s Hubtown Horse Owners Club

The Hubtown Horse Owners Club is an initiative brought forward by collaboration between Truro Raceway Ltd. and the Truro Harness Horse Owners Association as a way to introduce and bring affordable horse ownership to the community in rural Nova Scotia.

Individuals were able to buy into the ownership club for a fraction of what it would normally cost to own a Standardbred racehorse. Members of the Hubtown Horse Owners Club share in the ownership of two Standardbreds purchased by Truro Raceway. The one-time membership fee of $200 helps cover the cost of training and stabling at Truro Raceway. If the horses make any money after training and expenses, the Owners Club will share in the profits.

“I’ve come to the realization that unless you have a connection to harness racing, there is no easy way to get involved, so we created this club to do just that by making it affordable and easy to become a horse owner,” said Kelly MacEachen, the general manager of Truro Raceway Ltd.

The Hubtown Horse Owners Club acquired ownership of an eight-year-old Well Said gelding, Well Did, and a seven-year-old Artistic Fella mare, Larjon Lachlan, in early April. Both horses are gearing up for their first start for the Hubtown Horse Owners Club this Friday (June 21), after a successful qualifying trip at the Truro oval last week.

While both horses are owned by the Hubtown Horse Owners Club, they are trained by two separate trainers at Truro Raceway. After an application and committee review process, Paul Langille and George Rennison were handed the training duties. Well Did is in the care of Langille and Larjon Lachlan is stabled in the Rennison barn.

“We are happy to share that all club memberships have been sold. A total of 125 shares have been bought to bring new and old faces alike back to the homestretch at Truro Raceway,” said MacEachen.

Opening night for the Hubtown Horse Owner’s Club will kick off with a Hubtown Club tent sponsored by Home Hardware, which will provide a space for the 125 club members to meet and cheer on their horses. The local 4H Club will also be on hand with a fundraising BBQ and there will be several giveaways for those in attendance throughout the night.

The horses will dual it out at the Truro oval in Race 11. Larjon Lachlan will start from Post 3 with Marc Campbell and Well Did will be driven by Paul Langille from Post 4.

Post time for Race 11 has been slated for 9:30 p.m.
