Trot Insider has learned of two active cases of equine herpesvirus in Ontario, both of which were reported today (Wednesday, March 31) by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
A 17-year-old gelding at a boarding facility in the municipality of Kawartha Lakes was confirmed positive for equine herpesvirus myelonencephalopathy (EHM) on Thursday (March 25) after showing ataxia (lack of muscle control or coordination) and nasal discharge. The horse is recovering in isolation and has been vaccinated against equine herpesvirus. No other horses on the property have shown any clinical signs of EHM.
In an unrelated incident, a 19-year-old gelded pony in Wellington County was confirmed position for EHM on Friday (March 26) after showing ataxia and difficulty urinating, and seven horses at the same boarding facility were exposed to the virus. The pony is currently being treated at hospital under veterinary supervision.
