Bring A Friend, Cullen Keefe N At Clinton

While it's been an uncooperative summer for weather at Clinton Raceway, it hasn't stopped the fans and supporters from coming out to take in an afternoon of racing or support the local groups and clubs taking part in the Day at the Races fundraising program.

Sunday afternoon (July 16) was no different: it rained, was overcast, and was not the most beautiful day, but the Goderich and District Collegiate Institute was able to raise just under $1,000 for their robotics club.

The crowd on hand bet just over $27,000, and Natasha Day, Bruce Richardson and Tyler Moore all scored driving doubles on the ten-race card.

Cullen Keefe N ($4.00) won the featured $5,000 Preferred 3 pacing event in 1:58.2, working clear of Jackstan early and keeping him a length at bay to prevail as the even-money favourite. Lorne House drove the seven-year-old Christian Cullen entire for owner-trainer Samuel Taylor.

Standardbred Canada's Bring a Friend event saw many new faces on track, and Dale Howe brought his group out to the winner’s circle following race seven for a souvenir picture.

The very first showdown of the Hillbilly Horses took place following race nine, and four employees of Blackburn Radio took to the track to bounce their way to the finish line. Susan Chapman, Tanya Merner, Julie B and Lauren Dietrich were vying for the $200 donation to the charity of their choice. Clinton Raceway and Blackburn Radio ponied up $100 each to donate. It was a tight race from the word "go", but Tanya managed to sneak out the win at the wire, with the donation being made to the head and neck unit at the London Health Sciences Centre.

Contestants from Blackburn Radio line up for the Hillbilly Horses charity race on Bring a Friend weekend at Clinton Raceway.

Live harness racing returns next Sunday (July 23), with the second annual Vic Hayter Memorial Trot.
