Horse owner and trainer Tom Bain, one of the principals involved with resurrecting harness racing at Leamington Raceway, was recently hospitalized after a training accident.
Bain, who also serves as the Mayor of Lakeshore and the Essex County Warden, was thrown from the sulky by a two-year-old he was training.
"It bolted to the left and when I grabbed the lines to take a hold of it, the foot stirrup busted so I lost my balance," Bain told The Windsor Star from his hospital bed. "The horse went over the end of the track, and so did I."
Bain figures he was thrown 10-15 feet. He suffered a broken collarbone, four broken ribs, a broken bone in his back and a bruised lung. The horse is fine.
"The horse came down with me but stayed on his feet, ran back to the barn and stopped," Bain said with a smile.
While he won't be back in the sulky for a while, he's still managing to take care of some of his administrative work by making calls from his hospital room.
