SC Rewind: Picture Parade

Published: April 17, 2021 10:54 am EDT

This week's Rewind is another version of Picture Parade. Once again it has a theme to it and this time it's all about Geography. If you didn't excel in Geography while in school, NO problem just read on because this will be way more fun for you.

The aim of this week's guessing game is to establish "Where Is It?" If you were standing where each of these pictures were taken where would you have been? The subjects cover a wide variety of locations from all over the map but each have something to do with the past of harness racing. Precious few of these places still exist most have vanished from the landscape. Hope you enjoy the oldies.

The rules remain the same. You send in your best guess along with the appropriate number and the fun begins. Tune in during the coming week to get a full rundown on the correct answers.

# 1 - Under the heading, "this place looks like it's seen better days" where do you think this picture was taken? Back in the day it was a pretty popular place.

# 2 - Looks like a pretty full parking lot in this circa 1970 photograph. There must have been something pretty important going on. Can you figure out where it is?

# 3 -This was a most unusual structure and perhaps almost a one of a kind type of building if you can even call it that. Where was it located and furthermore what was it used for?

# 4 - The entrance to this once famous location was demolished many years ago so it's good we have a picture to remember it. Where was this entrance located? Name the track if you can.

# 5 - This photo was captured by noted photographer Dave Landry. Can you tell us where it was taken? Pretty famous spot.

# 6 - These stables were demolished a few years ago but stood for many years at a certain location. Where were they a familiar landmark, visible from a couple of different streets?

# 7 - This very interesting collection of horse themed licence plates reportedly once hung in the race secretary's office at a certain U.S. track and perhaps still does. If I have been correctly informed, where was it displayed? Pretty neat, eh!

# 8 - If this track needed a fire truck they didn't want to wait for one to arrive so they had their own. Name the track where this old Mack truck was parked.

# 9 - Can you identify the location shown here? It was named after one of the town's most famous residents who was well known back in the 1800's.

# 10 - Can you recognize where this track is located based on the above aerial photo ? If your answer is "oui", then let us know what you think the location is.

Bonus Photo: Shown above is the homestead of a rather famous racing family. Can you identify the name of the folks who called this lovely house their home?

Quote For The Week: My late father was involved in logging and lumbering for much of his life and always used teams of horses extensively. During stormy or inclement weather he often jokingly said "I don't mind the men being out in this weather but I don't want the horses to be."

The Rewind readers turned out to be pretty good Geography students. At the time of writing two pictures went without being correctly identified (#7 & #8)
The correct answers were as follows :
1 - Kingston Park or Frontenac Downs - photo taken long after its closure
2 - Orangeville track. Probably on a Sunday afternoon
3 - Covered track at St. Marys, Ont. - Property now the site of a retirement home
4 - Entrance to Dufferin Park Toronto. Closed in 1955
5 - Goshen N.Y. - No idea of horse and driver
6 - Windsor Raceway Barn C - Visible from Sprucewood or Matchett Rd.
7 - Display once hung in office of Steve Wolf, Marketing Director at Pompano Park
8 - Children on fire truck at Roosevelt Raceway, Long Island N.Y.
9 - Connell Park - Woodstock, N.B.
10 - Quebec City - Jacques Cartier Raceway aerial - 1970's
Bonus Photo - Picturesque Rowelands homestead at Newton Robinson, Ont. - Correctly identified by next door neighbour Marv Chantler
Thanks to everyone for your great work.

I was going to say number 4 is ether Dufferin Park or Thorncliffe. Since Gord took Dufferin I will Take Thorncliffe.

#1 - Kingston Park Raceway
#2 - Orangeville (guessing)
#3 - The indoor track in St Mary's, Ont.
#4 - East entrance Old Woodbine (Greenwood)
#5 - Goshen
#6 - Windsor Raceway
#7 - Monticello Raceway (guessing)
#8 - Blue Bonnets (guessing)
#9 - ?????
#10 - Three Rivers
Bonus - Q. W. Earl Rowe

3. Covered track in St. Mary’s
5. Goshen N.Y., maybe Ray Schnittker jogging, brown and gold colours
6. Windsor Raceway
8. Looks a lot like Greenwood

Number one definitely my old stomping grounds Kingston Park Raceway or previously known as Frontenac Downs.

Very nice QUIZ Robert. my memory is not what it use to be, I'll take a guest at some: #5, Windsor raceway, #6, Du Quoi Ill.#10 3 Rivers Raceway, #9 Rideau Carleton,

#3 looks like the St Mary's track of Teeder Kennedy
#5 Goshen
#6 barns at Windsor Raceway

Just guessing, but #2 Orangeville??
#4 Garden City??
#8 Blue Bonnets?
#9 Inverness?
#10 Hippodrome Quebec?

#3 is the 1/4 mile covered track at the old fairgrounds of my hometown in St. Marys, Ontario. It has since been torn down. I believe the last horses trained there were thoroughbreds owned by the late Teeder Kennedy of Toronto Maple Leafs fame. Kennedy a multiple Stanley Cup champion and former captain of the Leafs was once ranked by Sports Illustrated as having the best face off skills in the history of the NHL.

Number 3 maybe indoor track in St Mary's, Ont.
Number 10 maybe Three Rivers, Que.

Great photos and some guesses 1. Frontenac Downs, Kingston 4. Looks like the entrance to Greenwood off Coxwell. 5. Looks to me like Goshen, New York. That's it for me. Thanks Robert.

10 OUI...Hippodrome de Quebec; the bottom left, the roof of the Colisée de Quebec

I can only hazard a guess at three.....
#6 Greenwood Backstretch?
#9 Inverness Raceway
#10 Blue Bonnets ?

Well the bonus question is easy. I lived next door. It is the home of the Honourable W. Earl Rowe in Newton Robinson, Ontario.
#1 Guessing Garden City in St. Catherines
#2 Guessing Pompano Raceway in Pompano FL
#3 ????
#4. Greenwood or Old Woodbine
#5 Goshen or The Red Mile
#6 Meadowlands Barns
#7 ????
#8 New Woodbine
#9 In the Maritimes??
#10. Blue Bonnets Raceway in Montreal
Bonus Q. W. Earl Rowe

Very interesting pictures. No. 5 is Historic Track at Goshen, New York.

Regards, Bert Clish

# 10 looks like the old track in Quebec City, where, many years ago, my lifelong interest in harness racing began.
