Silent Sunrise was a winner last night at The Raceway at Western Fair District. That she even raced is somewhat of a miracle.
While her raceline two starts ago at Western Fair shows a very game effort to finish second, what happened before that race could have been tragic.
As the field for the fifth race was headed to the gate on November 18, Silent Sunrise had an equipment malfunction, leaving driver Donnie Graham without the ability to steer his horse.
The GateCam picks up Silent Sunrise, who should be lining up right in front of the camera, veering toward the outside of the racetrack. Anthony MacDonald, driving Tommy Abe, was able to keep Silent Sunrise from trotting out to the edge of the track as the starting car hit the recall lights and slowed down.
Showing her manners, Silent Sunrise waited patiently at the stopped gate beside Northern Emerald and driver Bruce Richardson, who kept the filly contained before help could arrive to correct the equipment issue. Trainer Steve Bossence was quickly on the scene to aid Graham in keeping his filly calm and steady.
"I wouldn't expect many horses to do that, even veteran horses," said driver Bob McClure as part of Western Fair's pre-card show on Tuesday night.
